The origin of its name is subject to various interpretations — some associate it with jalpai (olive) and guri, meaning “land of olives”, while others associate it with Jalpesh, a local deity, and a Bhutanese term related to a market for woollen goods and essentials.
Following British annexation in 1864, Jalpaiguri was formally established as a district in 1869. The town functions as the administrative headquarters and is home to the Circuit Bench of the Calcutta High Court, reinforcing its stature as a regional hub of governance and justice.
The town also accommodates the Jalpaiguri Tea Auction Centre, which supports the trade of locally produced tea, further contributing to the district's economic identity.
